How to Judge Hand-Blown Glass Quality | 5-Point Checklist for Buyers

Sourcing hand-blown glass? Skip the fluff. Here's what actually matters.

Hand-blown ≠ machine-made. Accept slight asymmetry, minor thickness variations, and tiny bubbles. These are craft signatures, not defects.

The real question: "Does it meet agreed standards and function well?" Not "Is it perfect?"

The 5-Point Quality Check

1. The Rim Test

Run your finger along the rim. A quality piece has a smooth, fire-polished finish—never sharp or gritty.

  • Pass: Smooth, rounded edge

  • Fail: Raw spots, roughness, chips, or cracks

2. The Pontil Mark

Flip the glass over. The small circular mark on the base is the pontil mark—proof of hand-blowing.

  • Pass: Smooth, finished base

  • Fail: Sharp, jagged, or unfinished edges

3. Bubble Check

Scattered tiny bubbles? Normal. The concern is size and density.

  • Pass: Small, isolated bubbles (<2mm, well-distributed)

  • Fail: Large clusters, open/cracked bubbles, or dense patches that weaken the glass

4. Balance & Feel

A quality glass should feel solid and balanced, not top-heavy or awkward.

  • Pass: Stable on a flat surface, comfortable in hand

  • Fail: Wobbles, uneven weight distribution, or hollow feeling

5. Visual Consistency

Within a production batch, pieces should look like they belong together.

  • Pass: Consistent color, clarity, and overall shape (within reasonable variation)

  • Fail: Wild deviations in size, color, or visible mold lines (means it's not hand-blown)

Clear Rejection Criteria

IssueWhy It Fails
Cracks, chips, sharp edgesSafety hazard; structural weakness
Unstable base (wobbles)Cannot function as intended
Large/dense bubblesWeakens structural integrity
Rough, unpolished rimUncomfortable to use
Mold linesNot hand-blown; machine-made

What to Agree With Your Supplier

Before production starts, lock in measurable standards:

  • Weight: Target ± acceptable range

  • Capacity: Brimful vs. working capacity (clarify)

  • Height: Acceptable tolerance (±2mm is typical)

  • Rim finish: Fire-polished required

  • Bubble limits: e.g., no bubbles >2mm, max count per piece

Always request a sample batch — not just a single perfect sample. Understand the natural variation before committing.
